The processing time for student visas has gotten significantly longer, largely due to screening procedures setup by the Trump administration. The result is far fewer student visas being granted, over 40% in the last 3 years. In turn, many international students are opting to apply for visas in countries more welcoming to them.

This is a great loss of human potential to the United States. The university system is one of the main draws for foreign talent to the country. If we are to remain competitive on the global stage, student visas need to be going up, not down. These international students want to come to the US for their education, and we as a country should want them here. Bureaucratic hurdles and visa processing delays help no one and hurt us all.
